born in 1925 in normal, illinois, meatyard purchased his first camera when he was 25 years old to photograph his son, michael. during the mid-1950s, meatyard attended a series of summer workshops with henry holmes smith and minor white. he photographed much of his work in abandoned farmhouses in central kentucky during family outings as well as in derelict spaces around lexington and developed the film in the makeshift darkroom in his home. the series of images in the family album of lucybelle crater feature his wife, madelyn, in a witch's halloween mask, posed with a different friend or relative in a transparent mask. both humorous and grotesque, the photographs act as a doorway to a dreamworld with endless interpretations.
